Uchben’ kaj

Uchben’ kaj (Uxbenka) was a Classic Period (AD 250-800) Ancient Maya center situated in the southern foothills of the Maya Mountains. While people were living on the landscape for thousands of years before, the first ancient Maya occupations at Uxbenka began during the Late Preclassic, around AD 1, near Group A, the Stelae Plaza. The population grew during the Early Classic (AD 250-600). During the Late Classic (AD 600-800), the administrative area shifted from Groups A to Groups B-F. Stelae in Group A tell stories of dynastic histories and long distance connections among rulers of Uxbenka. The temples and ball courts provide insight into the administrative and ritual events that occurred at the ancient center. Uxbenka was abandoned during the Terminal Classic around AD 830, though small groups of people continued to live on the landscape for years afterward.
